Expanding Your Horizons
Young Women Exploring Math & Science Careers
Expanding Your Horizons is a group whose purpose is to raise the awareness of opportunities for careers for women. Their main activity is the production of a conference for middle school aged girls. During this one-day conference, girls attend hands-on activity sessions led by women in science, engineering, mathematics, and related fields that are designed to give them some insight into the world of women in these careers. Girls are shepherded through this experience in groups of a dozen or so led by female college students currently majoring in these fields. Girls also eat together and participate in a competitive science activity. Over 300 girls attend the conference annually.
The conference is a joint effort sponsored by UW-Madison, Edgewood College, MATC, and the Girl Scouts of Blackhawk Council. The board is composed of women from each of these institutions. Louise Stracener (Edgewood Chemistry Faculty) and Amy Schiebel (Edgewood K-16 Science and Science Outreach Director) are current Board Members. Faculty and students from Edgewood College lead sessions at the conference and provide administrative support for the conference.
